The challenges of meeting the health care needs of individuals with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) are often magnified during disaster response. This session will provide background and recommendations how emergency responders should address the cultural and linguistic needs of individuals with LEP, highlight best practices and strategies for successfully reaching LEP growing populations in a major disaster, and discuss national, state, and local advocacy efforts related to emergency preparedness and the response planning process for meeting the needs of their LEP patients and communities following natural and man-made disasters.
Nina Agbayani Grewe, RN is the Director of Programs at the Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations (AAPCHO) and is responsible for overseeing AAPCHO’s programs, which offer technical assistance, training, coordination, and resources to support the establishment and expansion of services for medically underserved Asian American, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander (AA&NHOPI) communities.
Joan Watson-Patko, MSW, is the Director of Community Development and South LA Area Health Education Center Director at the Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County (CCALAC). Her role at CCALAC involves the oversight of multiple community programs; including CCALAC’s Disaster Preparedness Program, which is currently comprised of thirty-two Member clinic organizations of CCALAC and approximately one-hundred primary care sites.
Andrew Ma, CID, is the Associate Director of Services at Asian Pacific Health Care Venture, Inc. (APHCV) which is a community health center located in the Hollywood/Los Feliz area of Los Angeles with 3 clinic site locations. Mr. Ma oversees the Community and Facilities Department which includes APHCV’s Disaster Preparedness Program, HIV services, outreach, enrollment, capital projects, and marketing.
